Making Communities Livable

Mercer County should plan for, preserve and promote livable communities. A vision for livable communities was created by the visioning committee based on input from the regional public meetings and public opinion survey. The ingredients for livable communities in order of priority are shown below.

  • Priority 1 (higher priority) Good schools Low crime (adequate public safety) Good health care Healthy, diverse economy (good jobs) Sound housing conditions Ease of traffic movement, mobility, access Affordable housing Sound infrastructure (water/sewer, utilities)

  • Priority 2 Sound, attractive downtowns Intergovernmental cooperation Zoning & land development controls Regional cooperation & planning Neighborhood parks (close-to-home) Broad community recreation facilities Rural setting, countryside & open spaces Urban/rural diversity Low cost of living

  • Priority 3 Small-town atmosphere Thriving farms & agriculture Environmental controls Good human service programs Support programs for low income & disadvantaged

  • Priority 4 (lower priority) Public transit system Artistic/cultural activities & events Historic sites & building
